Janina Chwiatkowska Porada Seebeck

 

Mrs. Janina Chwiatkowska Porada Seebeck, 64, of Linden, died Friday, September 3, 2010 in the RWJUH at Rahway.

Born in Poland, Mrs. Seebeck came to the United States in 1978 and lived in Irvington before moving to linden in 1988.

She was the owner and operator of Sub City in Kenilworth for 26 years, retiring in 2007.

Mrs. Seebeck is predeceased by her husbands, Jan Porada and Herbert D. Seebeck Sr.

She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Iwona Siedlecka, her son, Slawek Porada, her brother, Jan Chwiatkowski, her sister, Teresa Gawlowska and her three grandchildren.

 

Juvenal Camacho

 

Mr. Juvenal Camacho, 72, died Thursday, September 2, 2010 in the Nebraska Heart Hospital, Lincoln, Nebraska.

Born in the Madiera Islands, Portugal, Mr. Camacho came to the United States when he was in his 20's and lived in Newark before moving to Shelton, Nebraska 5 years ago.

He was the owner and operator of the Finesse Auto Body Shop, Newark for many years before retiring 15 years ago.  He greatly enjoyed this time spent working alongside his only son, Borys, in the auto body shop.

Mr. Camacho is survived by his son, Borys P. Camacho, his four daughters, Hebe Soares and her husband, Adimer, Hellen Gorde and her husband, John, Keila Cengiz and her husband, Huey and Anisia Rodrigues , as well as his five cherished grandchildren.

 

 

Pauline M. Rainville Anderson

 

Mrs. Pauline M. Rainville Anderson, 81, of Iselin, died Wednesday, August 25, 2010 in the Haven Hospice at JFK Medical Center, Edison.

Born in Woonsocket, RI, Pauline lived in Garwood since the 1940’s and moved to Iselin in 2008.

She was a lab worker for Burry Biscuits, Elizabeth for 45 years, retiring in 1990.

Pauline is the daughter of the late Leo Rainville and the late Alice LaValle Rainville.

She is survived by her three nephews, Michael R. Chapka, Thomas Chapka and Roger Rainville.

 

Irene A. Smith Drukas

 

Mrs. Irene A. Smith Drukas, 87, of Rahway died Friday, August 13, 2010 in the RWJUH at Rahway.

On Wednesday, August 18th., family and friends are invited to meet directly at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Madison Hill Rd. Clark, where a committal service will take place at 10:30AM at the family plot.

Born in Nanticoke, Pa., Mrs. Drukas lived in East Orange for 5 years before moving to Rahway in 1959.

She worked for over 45 years in the food service industry and spent many years as the hostess, as well as a waitress, for the Kingston Restaurant in Union, before her retirement 25 years ago.

She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary American Legion Post #5, Rahway.

Mrs. Drukas is survived by her husband of 61 years, George J. Drukas, her son, Frank P. Drukas and his wife, Maureen, her daughter, Jaye E. Drukas and her companion, Taryn Bostwick, her granddaughter, Dana Anne Isherwood and her great grandson, Quinn J.F. Isherwood.

George Bali Jr.

 

Mr. George Bali Jr., 80, died Sunday, August 8, 2010 in the Trinitas Regional Medical Center, Elizabeth.

Visitation will be on Wednesday from 7-8:00PM in the Kowalski Funeral Home, 515 Roselle Street, Linden. Cremation and the burial of the cremains in the family plot will be private.

Born in Linden, Mr. Bali was raised in Czechoslovakia, but at the age of 18, he returned to the USA.  He settled in Linden where he resided until 7 years ago when he went to live with his daughter, Karen, in Port Reading.

Mr. Bali was a machinist for over 25 years for Hyatt Roller Bearing, Clark and retired in 1986.

He is predeceased by his wife, Jean A. Dudek Bali (2001) and his son, George Bali III (1999).

Mr. Bali was a kind and caring man who always thought of his family before anything else.  He is survived by his daughter, Karen Silva and her husband, Fernando, Maryann Kobilis and her husband, Ed and four grandchildren, Justin, Amanda, Michelle and Eddie.

 

Carolyn S. Wallace Figueroa

 

Mrs. Carolyn S. Wallace Figueroa, 65, died Thursday, August 5, 2010 in the Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Mrs. Figueroa lived in Elizabeth and Linden for 25 years before moving to Gainesville, Georgia in 1993.

She is predeceased by her husband, Michael Figueroa (September 20, 2009) and her father, Guy Wallace (1987).

Mrs. Figueroa is survived by her six sons, Michael Figueroa Jr. and his wife, Dawn, Thomas Figueroa and his wife, Heike, Timothy Figueroa and his wife, Michele, David Figueroa and his wife, Jennifer, Vincent Figueroa and his wife, Ann and Robert Figueroa, her mother, Ethel Elrod Wallace, her brother, Clifford Wallace and ten grandchildren.

 

Helen Olesko

 

Private funeral services were held for Miss Helen Olesko, followed by her burial in the family plot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Linden. 

Miss Olesko, 89, died Wednesday, August 4, 2010 in the Delaire Nursing & Convalescent Center, Linden.

Although born in Elizabeth, she lived her entire life in Linden.

She is predeceased by her parents, Stanley Olesko and Anna Poczarek Olesko and her brother and sisters, Stanley, Josephine, Mary, Catherine, and Dorothy.

Helen was cherished by her cousins, her friends and her caretakers.

Peter Romanienko

 

Mr. Peter Romanienko, 82, died Friday, April 16, 2010 in the Indigo Manor, Daytona Beach, Fla.

Born in Augustow, Poland, Mr. Romanienko came to this country in 1958.  He lived in Elizabeth for 2 years and Linden for 31 years, before moving to Florida in 1991.

He was the owner and operator of a gasoline service station in Rahway, for 28 years, retiring in 1991.

Mr. Romanienko is survived by his wife of 57 years, Maria Cimerman Romanienko, his son, Dr. Peter J. Romanienko and his wife, Victoria, his daughter, Lisa A. Romanienko, his brother, Joseph Romanienko, his sister, Marysia Rogowska and his grandson, Preston I. Romanienko.

Bernice Vann Troia

 

Mrs. Bernice Vann Troia, of Linden, died Friday in the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital  at Rahway.

Born in Erwin, North Carolina, Mrs. Troia Lived in Irvington before moving to Linden in 1993.

Mrs. Troia was a woman of southern grace, who had two great devotions in her life, her Lord and her family.

She is predeceased by her husband, Joseph A. Troia (2003) and her granddaughter, Elyse M. Williams (2004).

Mrs. Troia is survived by her daughter, Diana H. Muldrow, her brother, George Anderson Vann II and her sister, Mrs. Eloise Stewart.

Nicolasa Torres Ruiz

 

Mrs. Nicolasa Torres Ruiz, 58, of Linden, died Saturday, June 19, 2010 in the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway.

Born in Puerto Rico, Mrs. Ruiz came to the United States as a little girl and lived in New York City until 1982, when she moved to Linden.

She was a program analysis for the US Army Corps of Engineers, East Brunswick, for 36 years, retiring 4 years ago.

Mrs. Ruiz is survived by her husband of 22 years, Ruben Ruiz, her sons, Angel Serrano and his wife, Tammy, Louis Serrano and his companion, Sandra Wilson, Ruben Ruiz Jr. and Xavier Ruiz, her mother, Maria Garcia Torres, her brothers, Felipe Garcia, Manny Torres, Jose Torres, Edward Torres, Henry Lopez and James Lopez and her four grandchildren, Nicholas and Robert Serrano, Hannah Serrano and Emilee Wilson.

 

Thomas J. Pietrzak

 

Mr. Thomas J. Pietrzak, 60, died Wednesday, June 16, 2010 in the Overlook Hospital, Summit.

Born in Elizabeth, Mr. Pietrzak lived in Linden before moving to South Plainfield in 1975.

He was a dispatcher for the White Rose Inc., Carteret for 7 years until retiring two years ago.  Previously, Mr. Pietrzak was the road supervisor for Supermarkets General, for 25 years, followed by his employment as a dispatcher and warehouse foreman for Paul’s Trucking, both in Carteret

Mt. Pietrzak served in the US Army during the Viet Nam War.

He is predeceased by his wife, Constance Snyder Pietrzak (1985).

Mr. Pietrzak is survived by his brother, Stanley G. Pietrzak and his wife, Valerie.

Dolores Genevieve Chapka Slinski

 

Mrs. Dolores Genevieve Chapka Slinski, 76, of Ledgewood, died Sunday, June 13, 2010 in the Merry Heart Assisted Living Center, Succasunna.

Born in Linden, Mrs. Slinski lived in Roselle and Colonia before moving to Ledgewood 18 years ago.

She was a high school varsity athlete at the Abraham Clark High School, Roselle.  She was an assistant leader for the Girl Scouts of America in both Colonia and Roxbury.  Mrs. Slinski, along with her husband, was very active in the Linden Knights of Columbus Council # 2859 and she was a parental volunteer for the Pacers Bowling League.

She is predeceased by her husband, Raymond M. Slinski (1988).

Mrs. Slinski is survived by her two sons, Raymond M. Slinski and his wife, Cathy and Michael T. Slinski, her daughter, Mrs. Karen Davis and her husband, William, her brother, Frank Chapka and her four grandchildren, Selena Davis, Casey Slinski, Ryan Davis and Joshua Slinski.

Born in Poland, Mr. Nowicki came to this country and Elizabeth in 1959.

He was a forklift operator for the George Milton Can Co., Elizabeth, for 35 years, retiring 5 years ago.

Mr. Nowicki loved to fish with his son and he enjoyed studying the bible at the Trinity Christian Center, Elizabeth.

He is predeceased by his father, Jan Nowicki (1994).

Mr. Nowicki is survived by his son, David J. Nowicki, his daughter, Debbie Clemente and her husband, Philip, his mother, Janina Zawistowska Nowicki and his sister, Diane Apiar and her husband, Gus.

 

 

 

Jennie Ditzel Balbuena

 

Mrs. Jennie Ditzel Balbuena, 94, of Deerfield Beach, Florida, died Wednesday, June 9, 2010 in her daughter’s home in FLorida.

Born and raised on a farm in Linden, Mrs. Balbuena and her husband, Alexander, raised their children there. 

She was the head housekeeper for the Cranford Motor Lodge, when it opened in the late 1960”s.  In the 1970’s, she was the head housekeeper at the Holiday Inn in Carteret.  While living in Florida, she was the aftercare “Nana” at the Zion Lutheran Church School, Deerfield Beach, Florida.

Mrs. Balbuena was married in the Grace Episcopal Church, Linden, where she was also a member.  She later became a member of the St. Nicholas Episcopal Church, Pompano Beach, Florida.

Mrs. Balbuena traveled extensively with her family and friends and she lived a good, full life.  Everything in her life revolved around the  love she had for her family and taking care of them.  She was simply the best!  “Nana” will be greatly missed by all her loving family and friends.

She is predeceased by her husband, Alexander J. Balbuena (1974), whose heritage originates from the Rock of Gibraltar,  and her daughter, Linda M. Barbara (2007).

Mrs. Balbuena is survived by her three daughters, Alice Balbuena of Deerfield beach, Florida, Gladys Reinoehl and her husband, Fred, of Lilburn, Georgia and Pamela Kelleman and her husband, Joseph, of Phoenix, Maryland, her sister, Gladys Guertin, of Cranford and her 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

 

 

Albina V. Mularz Yanarella

 

Private services were held for Mrs. Albina V. Mularz Yanarella, 89, of Westfield, who died on Friday, June 11, 2010 in the Genesis ElderCare Center, Westfield.

Born in Poland, Mrs. Yanarella lived in various areas of New Jersey, a state that she loved and never wanted to leave.

She is predeceased by her husband, Joseph Yanarella, who died on December 8, 1995.

Janina B. Ziobro

 

Mrs. Janina B. Ziobro, 79, of Linden, died Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at the Center for Hope Hospice, Scotch Plains.

Born in Poland, Mrs. Ziobro came to the United States in November of 1964 and lived in Elizabeth before moving to Linden in 1970.

She worked in the housekeeping department of the Elizabeth General Hospital, Elizabeth for over ten years, retiring in 1993.

She is predeceased by her husband, Franciszek Ziobro (1980) and her son, Jan Ziobro (2006).

Mrs. Ziobro is survived by her sons, Joseph Ziobro and his wife, Krystyna and Stanley Ziobro, her daughter, Margie Ziobro, her daughter-in-law, Wendy Ziobro, her six grandchildren, Christina DePack and her husband, Michael, Richard Ziobro and his wife, Lucretia, Daniel Ziobro, Artur Ziobro, Michael Ziobro and Monica Ziobro and her great granddaughter, Mikayla DePack.

 

Mary Marczak Sonnenberg

 

Mrs. Mary Marczak Sonnenberg, 86, a lifelong resident of Elizabeth, died Thursday, May 20, 2010 in the Trinitas Regional Medical Center, Elizabeth.

During WW II, Mrs. Sonnenberg was proud to be a “Rosie the Riveter” working at the Diehl plant in Elizabeth. 

Mrs. Sonnenberg is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Eileen M. Ferenzi and Joseph Ferenzi, her brother, Thaddeus Marczak, her sisters, Mrs. Helen Manczak and Mrs. Ann Sabol, her two goddaughters, Darleen Tekula and Karen Manczak, many nieces and nephews and her beloved cat, “Honey” who was always by her side.

 

Joseph A. Billiams

 

Mr. Joseph A. Billiams, 66, died Tuesday, May 11, 2010 in his residence in Galloway Township, New Jersey.

Born in Elizabeth, Mr. Billiams spent the majority of his life there and recently lived for a brief period in both Avenel and Galloway.

He was a Union County Corrections Officer for over 20 years, retiring in 2005 and he was past president of the Superior Corrections Officers Association Local 199A.

Mr. Billiams was a 1st. lieutenant U.S. Army Retired, having served in Vietnam with the Americal Division.  As a Vietnam veteran, he also served with the Old Guard.  He was a past vice commander of the American Legion Argonne Post 6, Elizabeth, and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.  He was also proud to reach the Eagle Scout level of the Boy Scouts of America.

Mr. Billiams is survived by his wife of thirty one years, Linda McMorrow Billiams, his sons, Joseph A. Billiams Jr. and his wife, Juliana and Thomas Billiams, his daughter, Michelle Billiams, his brother, James B. Billiams and three grandchildren.

Mrs. Danuta Krol Sobkowicz, 49, died Friday, April 23, 2010 in the St. Barnabas Hospice & Palliative Care Center at Newark.

On Wednesday, April 28th. at 9:45AM, family and friends are invited to meet directly at St. Hedwig’s RC Church, Myrtle Street, Elizabeth, where a funeral mass will be offered at 10:00 AM.  The prayers of commital will follow  in the chapel in Rosehill Crematory, Linden.  Interment of the cremains into the family plot in Mt. Born in Poland, Mrs. Sobkowicz came to the United States on August 3, 1996 and has resided in Elizabeth since that time.

She is predeceased by her husband, Ryszard S. Sobkowicz (November 1, 2007).

Mrs. Sobkowicz is survived by her son, Daniel J. Sobkowicz and his fiancée, Marta A. Jendrusiak, her two daughters, Magdalena (Magda) Sobkowicz and her companion, Nilson Mezu and Karolina Sobkowicz, her two brothers, Mieczyslaw Krol and Jan krol, her three sisters, Anna Ciaston, Zofia Rolka and Maria Faron and two grandchildren, Naiomy and Adrian.

 

 

Lucy Skubish Voytasek

 

Mrs. Lucy Skubish Voytasek, 88, of Linden, died Monday, April 12, 2010 in the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway.

Born in Harrison, Mrs. Voytasek has resided in Linden for over eighty-five years.

She was a shop steward for Morey LaRue in Linden for thirty years, retiring in 1994.

Mrs. Voytasek is predeceased by her husband, John P. “Yankee” Voytasek (1987) and her son, Robert J. Voytasek (2003).

She is survived by her daughters, Carol Zagorski and her husband, Stephen and Donna Zagorski and her husband, Gary, her daughter-in-law, Jane A. Voytasek and her brother, Frank “Bob” Skubecz.

 

 

Grace M. Ferrise Kurasz

 

Grace M. Kurasz (nee: Ferrise), 84, passed peacefully to eternal life on Thursday, April 1, 2010 in her home in Cranford.

Visitation will be on Monday, April 5th. from 2-4:00 & 7-9:00 in the Kowalski Funeral Home, 515 Roselle Street, Linden.  On Tuesday, April 6th., visitation will be in the Calvary Lutheran Church, 108 Eastman St., Cranford, from 9:30 – 10:30AM, followed by a Celebration of Life funeral service in the church, led by Pastor Carol Lindsay.  Interment will follow  in St. Gertrude’s Cemetery, Colonia. 

Born in Dover, NJ, Grace lived in Linden and Rahway before moving to Cranford in 2000.

She was the owner and operator of Mia fashions in Linden and Grace’s Bridal in Rahway for over 40 years, retiring in 2000.  Since then she has volunteered her time as an office manager and costume consultant for Ren Media Publishing and the Union County Dance Centre, her son and daughter-in-law’s businesses and for the NJ Association for Gifted Children.

Grace served on the Caring Ministry of Calvary Lutheran Church and was a coordinator of the Linden High School Class of 1943 reunions.  In 1991, Grace wrote  “The Happy Heart Cookbook” after her husband’s heart attack.  Filled with nutritious recipes that helped in his recovery, her book motivated people with her personal story of dealing with illness and change in a positive way.  Grace Kurasz was a vibrant, gifted woman who was the ultimate caregiver and hostess and was loved by all who knew her.  She will be remembered most for her love and devotion to her family and friends.  

Grace is predeceased by her beloved husband, Joseph Kurasz (2003).

She is survived by her children, Joseph A. Kurasz and his wife, Patricia M. Kurasz, Mrs. Donna K. Vaupel and her husband, Ernie Vaupel, her brother, Anthony A. Ferrise, her grandchildren, Dan Vaupel and Kate Vaupel, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Mary A. Doklia Zack

 

Mrs. Mary A. Doklia Zack, 92, of Linden, died Sunday, March 28, 2010 in St. Joseph’s Catholic Home Nursing Center, Woodbridge.

Born in Bloomfield, NJ, Mrs. Zack lived her life in Linden.

She was employed by the Linden Board of Education, as a school secretary at School #5, for 42 years, retiring in 1990.

Mrs. Zack was a choir member and a founder and member of the St. Anne’s Social Club, both at St. George’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Linden and she was also the publicity secretary for the UCREA.

She is predeceased by her husband, John Zack (1975), her son, Richard J. Zack (1996) and her brother, Peter Doklia (2005).

Mrs. Zack is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Judith Z. Rothwell and J. Samuel Rothwell, her daughter-in-law, Mary T. Zack, her sister, Helen Krill, her grandchildren, Mary E. Ferentinos and her husband, Max, Kristin M. Allan and her husband, Gene and John J. Zack and his wife, Maryellen and four great grandchildren, Zack, Christina, Richard and Michael.

Mr. Szczepan S. Dutkiewicz, 53, of Plainfield, NJ, formerly of Elizabeth, died Wednesday, March 24, 2010 in University Hospital (UMDNJ) in Newark.

Born in Poland, Mr. Dutkiewicz came to this country on September 8, 1979 and lived in Elizabeth before moving to Plainfield about six years ago.

A hard working man, Mr. Dutkiewicz worked in various industries, but a majority of the time he was employed as a general laborer for the Sawicki Contracting Company in Roselle until 2006.

He is the son of the late Felix Dutkie and the late Josephine Zawisza Dutkie.

Mr. Dutkiewicz is survived by his two brothers, Jan Dutkiewicz and Edward Dutkiewicz, his three sisters and three brothers-in-law, Wieslawa Kozak and her husband, Kazimierz, Bozena Halemba and her husband, Marian, Kornelia Jozwiak and her husband, Bernard, his three nephews, Marcin Dutkiewicz, Jacek kozak and Andrzej Kozak and his six nieces, Marzena Hoffman, Elzbieta Halemba, Magdalena Halemba, Malogorzta Halemba, Melissa Jozwiak and Lauren Jozwiak.

Anna Stepalovitch Mega

 

Mrs. Anna Stepalovitch Mega, 98, formerly of Linden, died Sunday, February 28, 2010 in the Palms of Pasadena Hospital, South Pasadena, Florida.

Born in Mahoney City, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Mega lived in Linden for 50 years before moving to Florida in 2007.

She was a seamstress for the Arthur Dress Co., Linden for 22 years, retiring in 1979.

Mrs. Mega was a member of St. Theresa’s Ladies Auxiliary and a volunteer for over 15 years in the church’s bingo program.  She was also a member of the Tremley Point Senior Citizens Club, a 30 year member of the Linden Ambulance Ladies Auxiliary and a volunteer at the Gregorio Center Lunch Program, all of Linden.

She is predeceased by her husband, Michael J. Mega (1970).

Mrs. Mega is survived by her son, Michael R. Mega and his wife, Marie, her daughter, Shirley Leonhard and her husband, Robert, her sister, Catherine Beres, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

 

Charlotte Bickmann Hance

 

Mrs. Charlotte Bickmann Hance, 95, of Linden, died Friday, February 26, 2010 in the Father Hudson House, Elizabeth.

Born in Victor Minnesota, Mrs. Hance has lived in Linden since 1948.

She was an assembler for Glasseal Industries, Linden for 10 years, retiring in 1980.  Previously, she was a live-in custodian for 23 years for the Linden VFW Post 1397.

Mrs. Hance was a member of St. Theresa’s Rosary Society and Ladies Auxiliary, the Mt. Moriah Senior Citizens Club and she was a past den mother for 15 years for St. Theresa’s Cub Scout Pack 142, all of Linden.

She is predeceased by her husband, Edward N. Hance Sr. (1994), her daughter-in-law, Denise Hance, her three brothers, Benjamin Bickman, Joseph Bickman, Donald Bickman and her two sisters, Mildred Bickman and Elizabeth Bickman Otto.

Mrs. Hance is survived by her three sons, Edward N. Hance Jr. and his wife, Christine, William J. Hance and his wife, MaryAnn and John R. Hance, her brother, Felix Bickman, 10 grandchildren, Christine Guth, Michele Hance, Katherine Doktor,, Megan Doktor, Matthew Doktor, Edward N. Hance III, William J. Hance Jr., Paul Hance, Gabrielle Hance and Alexandra Hance and 4 great grandchildren, Dylan Matusiefsky, Chloe Hance, Brandon Guth and Joshua Guth. 

Mrs. Hance is also survived by many nieces and nephews and had a very special relationship with her two nieces, Mary Otto Broderick and Eileen Bickman Bucklin.

George C. Haffer Jr.

 

Mr. George C. Haffer Jr., 87, died Wednesday, February 24, 2010 in the Clark Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Northport, NY, Mr. Haffer resided in Winfield Park for 60 years before moving to Clark in 2007.

He was a truck driver for General Motors, Linden for 20 years, retiring in 1985.

Mr. Haffer was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army.

He is predeceased by his wife, Dorothy R. Flath Haffer (1999) and his son, Harold P. Haffer (2004).

Mr. Haffer is survived by his children, George C. Haffer III and his wife, JoAnn, William G. Haffer and his wife, Marge, Kathleen Tango ands her husband, Michael, Dorothy N. Born in Rahway, Mrs. Evangelista lived there until moving to Linden 35 years ago. 

She was a factory worker for Elmo American Leather in Edison for 30 years, retiring in 2000.

Her love of her family and spending time with them, combined with her avid love of reading were the most important aspects of her life and how she lived it.

Mrs. Evangelista is survived by her husband, Ralph Evangelista, whose relationship together dates back to 1974.  She also has five children, Joseph Rivera and his wife, Rose Marie, Brian Hurt and his wife, Barbara, Michael Hurt and his wife, Debbie, Gary Hurt and his wife, Antonia and Miss Brenda Hurt and her companion, William Karlowski and three grandchildren, Danielle Rivera, Griffen Hurt and Bryana Karlowski.

Born in Rahway, Mrs. Gergich was a lifelong Linden resident.

She was a secretary for American Cyanamid, Linden from 1971 to 1993.  After that she worked for a few years for the City of Linden as a library assistant in the main branch.

Mrs. Gergich is predeceased by her mother, Elda Butala Gorringe (1997).

She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Edwin Gergich, her daughters, Brieann Howey and her husband, William and Andrea L. Gergich, her father, Edward K. Gorringe, her brothers, Keenan and Timothy Gorringe and her three grandchildren, Cassandra and Nicholas Howey and Connor Breuche.

 

Michael “Mickey” Evan

Born in Elizabeth, Mr. Evan was a life long resident of Linden, where he worked as a maintenance man in the Public Works department for a number of years.

Mr. Evan was associated with the Linden Knights of Columbus Council # 2859, as a member, a charter member of the Squires Circle and a  fourth degree member of the Father John P. Washington Assembly.  Mr. Evan was a member and the historian for the HOG Garden State Essex-Hudson Chapter, a member of the North American Fishing Club and he enjoyed playing “Santa” for many of the local Christmas toy drives.

Mr. Evan is survived by his brother, Mark T. Evan and his wife, Katherine, his sister, Mrs. Michele Stotz and her husband, Carl and two nephews, Ryan and Trevor Evan.

Born in Clymer, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Swiontkowski lived in Carteret before moving to Linden in 1946.

Born in Elizabeth, Bertha lived there before moving to Linden in 1965.

Bertha worked in the maintenance department of the Town & Campus Catering Facility in Elizabeth for 9 years until she retired in 1985.  Prior to that, she was a supervisor at the Simmons Manufacturing Co., Elizabeth from 1942 to 1974.

Bertha was a member of the Senior Citizens Club and the Immaculate Heart of Mary Society, both of St. Hedwig’s Church.  She was also a member of the Polish Women’s Alliance and the Polish National Alliance of Chicago.

Bertha is predeceased by her brothers, Chester Dulemba (1969), Stanley J. Dulemba (1994) and her sister, Jean (Jennie) B. Dulemba (1991).

Born in Elizabeth, Mrs. McBride lived there before moving to Linden, where she resided for fourteen years until settling in Melbourne, Florida in 1995.

Until 2008, she was an officer manager for ten years in a dental practice in Indianlantic, Florida.

Mrs. McBride was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Lodge # 73 in Elizabeth and she was also a sponsor for the Satellite High School Wrestling Team, Satellite Beach, Florida.

She is survived by her husband of twenty-nine years, Dennis G. McBride Sr., her son, Kyle M. McBride, her brothers, Fred Gasior and his wife, Joan, Ron Gasior ad his wife, Nadine and her sister, Mrs. Christine Mermegas and her husband, Sakis, and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Elizabeth, Mrs. Sonntag lived in Hillside for twenty-five years before moving to Linden in 1990.

Mrs. Sonntag is survived by her brother, Francis J. LaBrecque, three sisters, Mary Addie, Corinne Soltys and Rosemarie Koenig and several nieces and nephews.

 

Edward Urbanowicz

 

Mr. Edward Urbanowicz, 64, of Linden, died Wednesday, January 13, 2010 in his home.

Born in Straizunt, Germany, Edward came to the United States in 1989 and lived in Berkeley Heights before moving to Linden in 1993.

For the past 15 years, he was the night custodial supervisor for the Roosevelt Middle School, employed by the Westfield Board of Education.  While living in Poland, Edward was a police officer for three years and he also served in the Polish Army and was awarded a medal.

Edward is survived by his wife of fifteen years, Dolores Marczewski Urbanowicz, sons, Darius Urbanowicz and his wife, Ursula and Radoslaw Urbanowicz and his wife, Anna, daughters, Anna Krol, Michelle Kozaczka and her companion, Roshon Elias, Adrienne Gawron and her husband, Thomas, Danielle Small and her husband, Tony and Robin Kozaczka, fifteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

John Angelo Colatrella

 

John Angelo Colatrella 72 of Wall, formerly of Colonia, passed away peacefully, on Monday, January 4, 2010, in the Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune, surrounded by his loving family.

John was born in Newark on April 27 1937 to John R. and Carmella (nee Miano) Colatrella.  He was a 1955 graduate of Barranger High School, where he was an All City football player.  John met the love of his life the former Sandy Hussar in 1953 and they were “Best Friends” from that day forward.  John and Sandy were married in 1957 in the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Newark and they celebrated their reception with 500 guests at the Crystal Lake Casino in West Orange.  John and Sandy lived in Newark before moving to Colonia in 1965.  They raised a daughter and four sons.  They started their business, Sandy's Fruit Baskets and Florist in Linden, in 1975 and it is still there today, run by his son Thomas and daughter Donna.  John was the co-founder and president of the Colonia Pop Warner Football Program , as well as the president and league director of the  Little Fellows League, in Colonia.  In 2000 he settled with his family in Wall Township and loved his new home and having his children and grandchildren all around him.  He was the BIGGEST YANKEE FAN EVER, a kind, soft spoken, sweet man, who was the center of his family.  He leaves behind many, many broken hearts. 

Surviving is his wife, best friend and high school sweetheart, Sandy, his daughter Donna of Neptune, his son John and daughter-in-law Linda of Wall, son Thomas of Wall, son Chris and daughter-in-law Sandy of Wall and son Daryl and daughter-in-law Jen of Wall.  He was cherished by 14 adoring grandchildren, Lexi, Bubba, Vinnie, Alicia, Olivia, Chris, Nicholas, Dylan, Dallas, Dean, Logan, Carter, Daryl and Roman.  John is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Madeline Colatrella of Freehold, and brother, Michael Colatrella, of Scotch Plains and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Poland, Mrs. Piech came to the United States in 1981 and settled in Linden.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph in 1954.  As a young widow with four children, the focus of her entire life was her dedication, caring and love for her family and there was nothing more important to her.

Mrs. Piech is survived by her daughters, Mrs. Cecilia Czech and her husband, Zdzislaw, Mrs. Maria Szczodra and her husband, Wieslaw, Mrs. Sabina Puc and her husband, Kazimierz and Mrs. Josephine Brzezicki and her husband, Thomas, five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

 

Robert J. Hammer

 

Mr. Robert J. Hammer, 66, of Linden,, died Thursday, December 31, 2009 in the East Orange Veterans Hospital.

Born in Jersey City, Mr. Hammer lived in Elizabeth before moving to Linden, where for the past twelve years, he was the owner and operator of the business,“A Fixture Warehouse”. He was also a U.S. Army veteran of the Viet Nam War.

Mr. Hammer is survived by his wife of twenty-five years, Mrs. Peggy J. McMillion Hammer.

 

Alphonse D. Sedia

 

Mr. Alphonse D. Sedia, 77, died Thursday, December 24, 2009 in his home in North Brunswick.

Born in Elizabeth, Mr. Sedia lived in Linden until moving to North Brunswick 20 years ago.

He was a location administrator for Mercedes-Benz in Somerville for 27 years, retiring in 1989. 

Mr. Sedia was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the United States Navy.

He is predeceased by a son, Allen M. Sedia (January 17, 2002).

Mr. Sedia is survived by his wife of 55 years, Doris J. Zielinski Sedia, a son, Michael J. Sedia and his wife, Cheryl, a daughter, Susan L. Sedia, a granddaughter, Melanie Sedia and a sister, Katherine Hoffman.

 

Stanisław Osiecki

 

Mr. Stanisław Osiecki, 54, of Linden, died Thursday, December 17, 2009 in the Robert Wood Johnson Hospital at Rahway.

Born in Siedliska Ełk, Poland, Mr. Osiecki came to the United States in 1993 and settled in Linden.

Mr. Osiecki was employed as a butcher for Schmalz’s European Provisions Inc., Springfield, for the past 16 years.

He is predeceased by his father, Lucjan Osiecki.

Mr. Osiecki is survived by his wife, Danuta Oleksiej Osiecka, his three sons, Rafal Osiecki, Emil Osiecki and Michael Osiecki, his mother, Zofia Sadowska Osiecka, his brother, Kazimiera Osiecki and his two sisters, Barbara Andrzejczyk and Alicja Osiecka.

 

Louise Haligowski Pawlowski

Born in Elizabeth, Mrs. Pawlowski was a life long resident of Linden.

She was a clerical worker for Lehman Power Corp., Linden for 15 years, retiring in 1985.

Mrs. Pawlowski was a member of the Fun & Friendship Senior Citizens Club, Linden.

She is predeceased by her husband, Alfred Pawlowski (1997) and her son, Thomas F. Pawlowski (1992).

Mrs. Pawlowski is survived by her son, Gerald Pawlowski, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Born in Elizabeth, Michael was a lifelong resident of Linden.

He was employed as a maintenance man for L’Oreal USA Inc., Clark until 2001.

Michael is survived by his wife of 15 years, Joan Noon Palay, his son, Michael Palay, his mother and father, Theresa Gergich Palay and Michael Palay, his sister and brother-in-law, Therese and Albert Teglash.

Edward was born on November 10, 1933 in Elizabeth, NJ, to his proud mother and father, Mary Dragan Kurek and Bruno (Ben) Kurek.

Since his birth and baptism, he was a parishioner of St. Theresa’s of the Child Jesus RC Church, Linden and attended and graduated from St. Theresa’s Parochial School.  Following grammar school, Edward continued his education at Linden High School and graduated in 1951. 

Edward was a project coordinator in the Management Information Systems Division in Merck & Co., Rahway for 38 years, retiring in 1989.

He was a member of the General Pulaski Memorial Parade Committee of St. Theresa’s Church and was a stockholder and member of the Polish National Home, both of Linden.  Edward was also an active member of the Retirees Association and the Quarter Century Club, both of Merck & Co., Rahway.

In the course of his life, Edward vacationed at the Jersey Shore and traveled to Majorca, Hawaii, South America and most, if not all, of the Caribbean Islands.  He enjoyed trips to Atlantic City and going to the fundraisers for the George Dorin Foundation and the Linden Lions Club.  A long time motion picture fan, Edward collected photos and autographs of many celebrities.

He is predeceased by his parents, Bruno (Ben) Kurek and Mary Dragan Kurek and a brother, Carl J. Kurek.

Edward is survived by his sister, Irene A. Kurek, his brother, George E. Kurek and his wife, Virginia, two nieces, Kara Silverman and her husband, Alan and Kristrina Kurek, two grandnephews, Luke and Adam Silverman and his two aunts,  Genevieve Dragan Adamski and Dr. Angelina Kurek Irvin.

 

Mary Chereda

 

Miss Mary Chereda, 91, died Sunday, November 1, 2009 in her home in Linden.

Born in Bayonne, Miss Chereda came to Linden as a baby and spent her entire life here.

She was a supervisor for Gordon’s Distillery in Linden for 42 years, retiring in 1980.

The daughter of the late Martin and Tessie Chereda, Miss Chereda is survived by her brother, Stanley Chereda and two nephews, Ron Joseph and Don Joseph.

 

Walter Karpinski

 

Mr. Walter Karpinski, 90, died Tuesday, October 20, 2009 in his home in Linden.

Born in Dickson City, Pennsylvania, Mr. Karpinski lived in Blakely, Pennsylvania before moving to Linden in1955.

He was a maintenance man for Schering Plough Corp., Union, for 27 years, retiring in 1983.

Mr. Karpinski was a member of the Polish National Catholic Church of Holy Trinity and St. Joseph, Linden.

He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Theo Lewandowski and his brother-in-law, David Beck and several nieces and nephews.

 

Adele B. Rozborksi Sadlowski

 

Mrs. Adele B. Rozborski Sadlowski, 88, of Linden, died Thursday, October 15, 2009 in the Cranford Health & Extended Care Center.

Born in Bayone, Mrs. Sadlowski lived in Elizabeth before moving to Linden 80 years ago.

She worked for Morey LaRue in Linden for over 50 years, where she started as a presser and advanced to being a supervisor before retiring 18 years ago.

Mrs. Sadlowski was a former member of the St. Theresa’s Ladies Auxiliary, Linden. She and her late husband, Casimir J. Sadlowski (1998) loved to travel by car.  Their joy was to spend their free time  visiting all the states of the United States and enjoying all this country has to offer.

Mrs. Sadlowski is survived by her two brothers, Benjamin P. Rozborski and Henry A. Rozborski and her sister, Mrs. Helen Jackey. 

 

William Sacks

 

Mr. William Sacks, 83, died Sunday, October 11, 2009 in the South Plainfield home of his son, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Linden, Mr. Sacks resided there until moving to Forked River 20 years ago.

He was employed by the City of Linden, working in the Public Works Department for 30 years, until his retirement in 1989.

Mr. Sacks was a veteran of WW II, serving in the U.S. Navy.

He is predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Mary D. Lutz Sacks (June 18, 2009)

Mr. Sacks is survived by his two sons, William E. Sacks and his wife, Dede and Robert M. Sacks and his wife, Marygina, his sister, Dorothy Klee and his two grandchildren, Ashley Sacks and Bobby Sacks Jr.

In additions to being surrounded by his family, Mr. Sacks always had his faithful canine companion “Baby” by his side.

Mr. Stalowski was born in Elizabeth and lived his entire life in Linden.

He was an engineering aide for Litton Industries, Morris Plains, for over thirty years, retiring in 1993.

Mr. Stalowski was a member of the Rolling Rovers Camping Club of Central NJ and he was an avid dancer at the Bayway Polish National Home, Elizabeth.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Helen Kesello Stalowski, four sons, John H. Stalowski Jr., Christopher W. Stalowski and his wife, Cheryl, Richard E. Stalowski and his wife, Isabel and Glen A. Stalowski and his wife, Janet, two daughters, Donna M. Dumont and her husband, Chris and Ellen A. Carter and her husband, Ed, his brother, Robert Stalowski and eight grandchildren.

 

Stella F. Krause Lacz

Born in Marsteller, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Lacz lived in White House Station before moving to Roselle in 1953.

A devout catholic, she was a communicant of St. Joseph the Carpenter R. C. Church, Roselle and was also a member of the Roselle Senior Citizens Club.

Mrs. Lacz is predeceased by her husband, Edward J. Lacz (1975) her two sons, Edward A. Lacz Sr. (2008) and Ronald A. Lacz (2005) and her grandson, Christopher Lacz.

She is survived by her daughter, Miss Barbara A. Lacz, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

 

Cindy Sue Montgomerie

 

Miss Cindy Sue Montgomerie, 50, of Elizabeth & Linden, died Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at the Trinitas Regional Medical Center, Elizabeth.

Born in Elizabeth, Cindy was educated in the Linden school system, graduating from Linden High School.  She lived most of her life in Linden, but had recently moved to Elizabeth.

Until 2008, she had worked as a waitress for the Mark twain Diner in Union.

Cindy is survived by her father, Robert E. Montgomerie, her mother, Roberta Lesser Montgomerie, her step-mother, Susan Montgomerie, her sisters, Michelle Fingerlin and Mrs. Jill Lee , her brother-in-law, Michael Lee, six nieces and four great nieces and great nephews.

 

Orlando H. Loureiro

 

Mr. Orlando H. Loureiro, 66, of Linden, died Tuesday, August 18, 2009 in the Trillium Health Center, Mississauga, Toronto, Canada.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Mr. Loureiro came to this country in 1968 and lived in Newark, New Jersey before moving to Linden 15 years ago.

He was a machine operator for Hansome Energy Systems, Linden for 10 years, retiring on June 1, 2009.

Mr. Loureiro is predeceased by his parents, Adriano Loureiro and Maria Zulmira Ferreira and his first wife, Neildes de Freitas Loureiro.

He is survived by his wife, Olga Castro Idrobo Loureiro, his children, Orlando H. Loureiro Jr. and his wife, Marcia and Margareth L. Diaz and her husband, Jose, a brother, Celso Loureiro and a sister, Mrs. Maria Emilia Loureiro and two grandchildren, Kevin Loureiro and Daniel Diaz.

Born in Newark, James lived in Carteret before moving to Roselle 29 years ago.

He was the manager of the Chemical Receiving Department of DeGussa Corp., South Plainfield from 1979 to 2001.

James was involved in the Bingo at St. Theresa’s Church, Linden, since 1992 and in 1999, he was put in charge of the weekly event.  He was also an avid bowler at Linden Lanes, as well as Jersey Lanes, where he was a member of the Tuesday Night Mixed League.

James is survived by his wife of 28 years, Michele Vereschak Barna, two daughters, Stephanie Oskar and her husband, Derek and Kristen Barna, two sisters, Karen Barna and Cindy O’Neill and a grandson, Zachary Oskar.
